Computer Skills Test No Longer Required for Graduation

Important Information for Parents and 8th grade students!

Starting with the current eighth-grade class, students will no longer be required to pass the eighth grade North Carolina Computer Skills Test for graduation. A new Technology Literacy Assessment will be given to all eighth-graders in order to measure students' proficiency in using content-specific tools and computer software. This assessment also measures students' knowledge and understanding of information technology and appropriate ethical behavior.

Although the previously given computer skills test is no longer a state requirement for graduation, Guilford County Schools (GCS) is still required to assess technology literacy and report proficiency rates to the U.S. Department of Education in order to continue receiving funding. This new assessment is important in helping us guide instruction and ensuring we are teaching our students effectively and equipping them with 21st century skills. The scores will not impact the student.

The Technology Literacy Assessment will be given in February to eighth-grade students currently following the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. Southeast Middle will be testing students from Feb. 9-22.  If students do not score as proficient in any area of the assessment, remediation will be provided and the students at Southeast Middle will be given a retest in March to ensure all students have a thorough understanding of this subject.

GCS wants to make sure the district is doing everything possible to help students be successful. In today's society, it is vital for students to be technology literate and have adequate technology skills.
